Rock climbing

“The rock still has something to teach me.”
Chris Sharma

I started climbing in 2018 through a PE elective in school. I’d never really thought about it before, but the first time I got on the wall, something about it felt strangely natural.

A bouldering gym, mid-session, with a wall of coloured holds.

Two years later I broke both my arms and had to stop for a while. Coming back took time: I had to rebuild my strength and my confidence.

I can sing Titanium with a straight face now.
X-ray of a healed forearm with no hardware.

Since then climbing has taken me to Malaysia, Thailand and Hampi in India, and introduced me to some of my closest friends. Every place has made the sport feel slightly different.

Climbing a steep limestone face on a rope.
Bouldering upside down under a granite roof, feet above head.
Hampi, India.

What keeps me coming back is the problem solving. A move can feel impossible for a whole session, and then I turn my hip slightly, move a foot a few centimetres or grip the same hold from a different angle, and it suddenly goes. Trying harder rarely fixes it.

I think a lot of life works the same way. Something small, changed in the right place, can change everything.
